Chapter 16
I disconnected my cell, tossed it in my purse, and turned over the Falconâs engine. Iâd just spoken with Garrett about Douglassâ call, his threat, and all the information weâd gotten from Daphne and the girls. Garrett had come to the same conclusion as Aunt Shirley and Hank about Douglassâ rant and threat, but it still didnât ease the ache in my heart. The only positive outcome was we added two more locations to his growing list of properties to check. Theyâd already cleared five properties. No sign of Douglass or Dayna anywhere.
âWeâre supposed to head to the three oâclock insurance fraud appointment,â I said. âBut I just donât feel like it. Why are we doing this when we should be looking for Dayna?â
âMaybe while doing our job we will find out something about Dayna,â Aunt Shirley suggested.
âSheâs right,â Hank said. âNothing to say we canât double check some of these properties again, just to make sure. Your next appointment is on Sherman Lane. Thatâs only three miles from Forest Drive where one of the abandoned properties is located. We hit Sherman Lane, you do your surveillance, then we swing by Forest Drive. Iâm sure we can hit at least three more properties while weâre at it.â
âDeal,â I said.
Sherman Lane was out past the high school and football field in a little subdivision of about fifteen houses. The lawns were well maintained and the houses were typical ranch-style brick homesâ¦very circa nineteen eighties.
âThis is an insurance fraud claim?â Hank asked. âLike what? He slipped and fell and canât work but really he can?â
âSomething like that. Guyâs name is Roger Stone. Heâs fifty-five, married, no children.â I parked three houses down from Stoneâs house and the three of us got out. âMaintenance guy for a company in Brywood. He claims he was standing on an eight-foot ladder changing out a lightbulb in the womenâs restroom when he fell straight backward and landed on his back and head. No one was in the restroom obviously, and there are no cameras of course.â
âSo he filed a claim with Workersâ Comp?â Hank mused.
âYes. Only, this isnât his first claim in the last six months. Back in February, he filed a claim stating he broke his arm when he slipped and fell in the menâs restroom after punching in to work.â
âSo heâs accident prone in bathrooms?â Hank suggested.
Aunt Shirley snorted. âA worker back in February came forward stating heâd seen Roger get out of his car that morning, favoring his arm before he walked inside the building. That same worker also knew Roger had gone skiing over the weekend.â
Hank nodded. âSo Roger gets injured while skiing, but waits until Monday morning to get help, and then places the blame on his job. Sneaky.â
âYep,â I agreed. âBut heâs not the only one. His wife filed a claim last year stating she fell at her place of employment in Kansas City. She actually received a rather large settlement from the company.â
âTaking advantage of the system,â Hank said.
